When Hope Falters
Steps that strengthen us in dark times
“For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead. Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.” Psalm 143:3-4, KJV
Have you ever felt that piercing sense of hopelessness? Like you’ve prayed and prayed and prayed, only to have your faith crushed?
When darkness crashes against our hope, we’re faced with two choices. We can press into the Lord and His truth, or we can descend into the enemy’s trap.
Psalm 143 clarifies the path we should follow.
“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.” Psalm 143: 5
Step #1: Remember
Think about God’s goodness in the past. As we recall delightful, precious times, our spirits lift.
Step #2: Meditate
Reflect on God’s mighty deeds. When we ponder His work in accomplishing our salvation as well as His continued work within our hearts, we are awed.
Step #3: Muse
Consider God’s creation. He designed and spoke everything into existence—including you and me. Dwelling on God’s power reminds us God can do the impossible.
“I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.” Psalm 143:6
Step #4: Stretch Forth
Spread your hands upward, reaching toward the Lord. God acknowledges our thirst for Him, and He will not turn away. As we position ourselves before Him, He restores our hope. We might not feel His movement, but we can trust that He is acting on our behalf.
Some final thoughts
Life contains heaviness, and our human response can’t sustain life’s pressures. We need the Lord. We need His strength. God’s Word guides us when hope falters.
The Psalms express some of the deepest, most intricate feelings. Treasures of truth leap from these scriptures into my heart. Comfort encompasses me when the psalmist’s words wash over my mind, refreshing and restoring my soul.
Can God replenish our hope?
Yes!!! His love shines into the darkness, dispelling the shadows. The Lord hears our cries for help, and He responds to the longing we possess for Him.
Take heart, my friend.
God knows every detail of your circumstances. He sees the hardship you face. And He is actively caring for you.
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13, NASB
In Christ’s Love,

Thank you for sharing this.It truly resonates with the reality many of us walk through when hope feels thin and prayers seem unanswered.Your reminder from Psalm 143 is powerful because it shows us that even David, a man after God’s heart, knew what it was to feel overwhelmed, desolate, and pressed down, yet he chose to turn his face toward the Lord.Pressing into God when darkness surrounds us is an act of faith, just as Scripture says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18 I love how these steps gently lead us back to the heart of God.Remembering His faithfulness anchors us, because “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” Hebrews 13:8.Meditating on His works renews our minds, just as Romans 12:2 reminds us, and musing on His creation restores our sense of awe, knowing that the God who formed the heavens also formed us with purpose Psalm 139:13–14.Stretching our hands toward Him is such a beautiful picture of dependence, echoing Psalm 63:1, “My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Your closing encouragement is deeply comforting.God truly does see every detail, and His care never slips from us, as 1 Peter 5:7 assures us, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you Even when hope falters, it is not gone, because our hope rests in Him alone.Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us that His mercies are new every morning and His faithfulness is great.Thank you for pointing hearts back to this truth.May the God of hope continue to strengthen, restore, and renew us all as we trust Him through every season.
Blessed by your words this morning!
